Sorry - realised I should have posted under drugs Confused

Hi - thankyou to everyone for the warm welcome and advice in my newly diagnosed thread a couple of weeks ago. Sorry not to have posted more but I have struggled with gritting my teeth to the end of term (3 days to go) and getting used to new meds and diagnosis. etc

I have noticed one thing, since being on the full dose of MTX that my tongue feels almost burnt and numb straight after taking them. I took them about an hour ago and the place where they touched my tongue in the brief moment before I swallowed them with a drink feels peculiar, as it has for the past 3 weeks. Does this make sense to anyone?

Another thing I wondered is if anyone has recommended an info leaflet or similar for family/colleagues/friends to read about RA. People think it is a sign of old age or that they also have a 'touch of RA' in their knee, hip etc.

Just wanted to say how helpful the site is - really grateful for all I have read and learned XX Ailsa

Hi Ailsa

Hope the benefits of Methotrexate are starting to kick in and you are feeling better.

I'm not much help as I haven't experienced the problem you describe with Mtx. I have had similar issues with the larger naproxen tablets ... that's because I can't throw them down my throat as fast! They do cause a mild burning sensation in my throat if I don't swallow with loads of cold water. It sounds as though the tablets are starting to break down before you have chance to swallow them and burning your tongue in the process. I presume you are taking the tablets with a cold drink? Hot drinks can make tablets dissolve as you probably already realise. Perhaps try taking them one at a time on a spoon with a tiny amount of water and get them right to the back of your throat Blink Sometimes just plain trial and error until you get what's right for you!

If you continue to have problems maybe mention to your GP or rheumy who may suggest injection instead. Keep trying!

The opening page of the NRAS website has a section with downloadable leaflets; all very useful and make interesting reading!

Good luck,

Lyn x

Hi Ailsa and welcome. I haven't noticed that problem with MTX, but I do with amitriptyline. If I don't take enough water with them they make my tongue and mouth go numb for a few hours. Once I crunched them up by mistake - I was eating some nuts and raisins, had put them in the same dish, and didn't notice I'd taken them out with the nuts! Boy, did my mouth feel strange for ages! I don't think I'll make that mistake again.
